Named after Bhima of Mahabharata, Bhimtal is an
ancient town in Lake district of Nainital, just 4
kms from Naukuchiatal. Bhimeshwara Mahadev Temple,
an ancient Shiva temple on the banks of Bhimtal
Lake, was built when Bhima and the Pandavas visited
this place during their banishment.
Bhimtal is situated at an altitude of 1370 meters
above the sea level and is famous for a small island
at its centre. Places of interest in Bhimtal include
"Garg Parvat" which is the source of local river,
Gargi and Nal Damyanti Tal, a small natural lake
where the palace of famous King, Nala is believed to
have drowned.
Hidimba Parvat is a hill 5 kms from Bhimtal where
Vankhandi Maharaj (a monk and famous
environmentalist) has created a small sanctuary for
wild animals. Around Bhimtal, the hill of Karkotaka
is famous for its Nag Temple where thousands of
people come to worship Nag Karkotaka Maharaja on
every Rishi Panchami.
